Student registrations for the 2027 edition of the Southeast Maths Olympiad have surpassed 20,000, with 20,078 students registered across the five southeastern states.
This nearly doubles the number of students who participated in the inaugural edition this year and draws serious attention to the competition, attracting government support and business partnerships.
The competition convener, Alex Onyia, announced the new figures. He stated that the competition has gained serious traction. It is now a solid driver of future prospects in the region.
” We have 20,078 students registered for the 2027 South East Maths Olympiad. We will close registration once we reach 40,000 students to allow us to plan ahead of time.” Onyia said
” We are raising a generation of scientists, inventors, and change-makers,” Onyia added.
The convener revealed that Imo State currently has the highest number of registrations, highlighting a strong zeal for education in the state. This aligns with the state winning the senior category of the competition in the inaugural edition, beating other states in the southeast.
The Southeast Maths Olympiad aims to raise the standards of the subject within the region’s curricula. It also aims to prepare students for the global market. It also promotes love for STEM in the region, prompting students to challenge themselves to achieve academic excellence.
Next year’s edition has attracted major sponsors such as Sterling Bank, which has committed N60 million to the competition. Defence maverick and Co-founder of Terra Industries, Nathan Nwachukwu, remains the single biggest individual contributor to the competition.
The Southeast Maths Olympiad was one of the major regional competitions this year, alongside the Southeast Venture Capital Program (SEVCP). These competitions seek to reignite the competitive spirit and burst of energy. This spirit characterised the old eastern region under the leadership of Dr Michael Okpara.
