The annual regional maths competition, Southeast Maths Olympiad, has hit 10,000 registrations for next year’s edition.
Alex Onyia, an Education enthusiast and convener of the competition, announced the milestone, stressing the massive gap between this year’s registrations and those for 2027.
” We’ve hit 10,000 registrations already for the 2027 South East Maths Olympiad. We are still in May 2026,” Onyia stated.
” By the end of 2027, an average child in the South East will be good at Maths. This is Maths revolution, and we are grooming Africa’s greatest workforce in 10 years,” he added.
The Southeast Maths Olympiad is a regional competition that hopes to promote STEM study and Mathematics in the eastern region. Students across three categories are tested on Olympiad-standard mathematics across the five states of the southeast.
The three categories are Primary, Junior, and Senior, corresponding to different levels of education. 2026 was a massive year with Imo State and Enugu State outshining other states in the region.
The competition is funded by donors from well-meaning Nigerians. Terra Industry’s Nathan Nwachukwu remains the biggest donor to this event, donating N15 million to the competition this year.
Maths Olympiad Resurging the Spirit of Competition in Eastern Nigeria
The Southeast Maths Olympiad is one of the many regional competitions in the Southeast. On May 25th, 50 tech startups will converge in Enugu and vie for 30 slots in the Southeast Venture Capital Program (SEVCP) by the Southeast Development Commission (SEDC).
The SEVCP is an attempt to jump-start the Southeast Tech ecosystem by injecting N70 billion into 30 startups that meet the competition’s strict requirements. Alex Onyia, the Olympiad convener, also doubles as an Education activist, bringing to the fore issues affecting education across Nigeria.
He runs Educare, an education tech startup that played a pivotal role in this year’s Southeast Maths Olympiad competition, which peaked in Enugu State, producing three overall winners.
