The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) provided standard distance measures for human activity close to power lines, warning against trading under high-tension power lines, as such comes with a lot of hazards.
Leveraging its official X page, the Disco outlined the standard distance measures for shops or trading spots located close to a power line following a recent fatal accident.
The standard distance measures stipulated by the EEDC include
- 5.5 meters on both sides for 11kV lines
- 5.5 meters on both sides for 33kV lines
- 15 meters on both sides for 132kV lines
- 25 meters on both sides for 330 kV lines
A point of sale (POS) operator was electrocuted by a fallen high-tension wire in Nibo, Awka, in Anambra State. The POS agent’s shop was located directly under the power line, which fell and electrocuted the victim on the spot.
The incident caused panic amongst residents and spread awareness on the dangers of operating under a power line, prompting the public message from the EEDC.

The EEDC is a south-east-based distribution company overseeing the distribution of electricity to Anambra State, Abia State, Enugu State, Imo State, and Ebonyi State. The EEDC partners with Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) for effective distribution of power across the five southeastern states in the region.
The Disco reported a potential monthly loss exceeding N1 billion due to a 2025 tariff reduction by the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC), lowering Band A tariffs from N209.50/kWh to N160.40/kWh.
MEDL and the EEDC are currently in a scuffle over the tariff reduction stipulated by the EERC.
