Education technology entrepreneur and CEO of Educare, Alex Onyia, has announced that the 2027 South East Maths Olympiad has received another major donation, bringing the total funds raised for the competition to N100 million.
On his X page, Onyia revealed that techno-industrialist Nathan Nwachuku pledged N40 million towards the project. The donation comes after Sterling Bank earlier committed N60 million to support the mathematics competition.
According to Onyia, winners in both the senior and junior categories of the Olympiad will also secure internships at Terra Industries, in addition to their cash prizes. He stated that winners in the senior category will receive N10 million, while winners in the junior category will get N5 million.
He added that the initiative aims to make education more attractive and rewarding for young people across the South East region. Onyia also expressed confidence that the investment in education and talent development would help produce one of the strongest workforces in Africa within the next decade.
Nathan Nwachuku also confirmed his support for the Olympiad on X, stating that all winners in the senior and junior categories would be offered summer internship placements at Terra Industries.
The South East Maths Olympiad has continued to attract support from individuals and organizations interested in science, technology, and mathematics education in Nigeria.
It is one of the two major competitions happening in the region this year. Today in Enugu, 50 tech startups will vie for over N70 billion in the South East Venture Capital Program (SEVCP). The VC fund program is an initiative of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), led by Mark Okoye.
Okoye believes the South East does not lack talent. Rather, he believes a lack of access to capital and mentorship is the real issue. According to him, this is something the VC fund will tackle.
Nathan Nwachukwu, Co-Founder of Terra Industries, donated N15 million to the inaugural edition of the maths Olympiad competition. The largest donor to the event so far. His latest N40 million donation to the Olympiad competition is the largest donation from an individual so far.
