Against the backdrop of a recent report by Philipps Consulting, which shed Anambra Education in a bad light, Woliwo Primary School, Onitsha, has emerged first in the just concluded President’s Teachers and Schools Excellence Award.
The development was revealed by Anambra State’s commissioner for information, Dr Law Mefor, on his X page, while also revealing that the school won a grand prize of a brand new 16-seater bus for their efforts.
Anambra’s education under the Soludo adminstration has come into question after a Philipps Consulting Report placed Anambra 33rd out of 36 on a specific educational index. The report has been heavily contested by the Anambra government and its supporters, claiming that the methodology used was Ambiguous and the report lacked credibility given the evidence on the ground.
The recent victory of an Onitsha-based school seems to shatter the illusion of a backslide in Anambra’s education. Private schools in Anambra state have been setting records by winning global and international competitions.
Woliwo Primary School winning the President’s Teachers and Schools Excellence Award marks the first public school to achieve this feat. The win by the public school, despite being commendable, marks the disparity between public and private schools in the state.

- Anambra’s education got a serious facelift under the Peter Obi adminstration after he supervised the transfer of Missionary schools from the state government back to the church in the state.
- The Church has shown better capacity in managing educational and health institutions over time, meriting the transfer and justifying the decision by upscaling the quality of education in Anambra State.
- Subsequent governments have come and gone since this was done, but the impact of this decision could still be felt to this day.
