The Management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, is facing tough criticisms from the general public over the poor state of environmental hygiene in the school premises.
The charge for a complete overhaul of the school’s sanitation system is led by Alex Onyia. He is an Education Influencer and Convener of the Southeast Maths Olympiad. Onyia appeared on the morning show on AFIA TV. He raised the issues and had a direct face-off with UNN’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Agha Egwu Inya.
Onyia argued that his vast experience from visiting various universities across the world has left him no option. He has to call out the UNN Management over the pitiable condition of its campus.
He reiterated that the university area smells and is not conducive to learning. His awareness campaign is geared towards shaming the UNN management into taking action on the situation.
In their Defence, the UNN’s acting PRO argued that the school has a robust sanitation procedure. He stated that students are responsible for messing up the environment. He also stated that reports in social and mainstream media are exaggerated and do not reflect reality.
UNN’s Legacy on Trial
UNN, despite current challenges, still has a legacy as one of Nigeria’s finest educational institutions. The school boasts of some of the highest published scholarly work in the country despite its administrative issues. Photos of the dilapidated condition of some of its hostels have gone viral on the internet many times. This draws attention to the longstanding issue of maintenance.
The Nsukka-based institution is under new management following the appointment of Professor Simon Ortuanya, an indigene of the host community. The professor of Law is the first indigene to hold the position. This put an end to a long stretch of local politics from Ndi Nsukka.
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, is credited with producing some of Nigeria’s brightest minds. Its alumni include personalities such as the late Herbert Wigwe, Co-founder of Access Bank, and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.
