The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) announced that it spends up to N200 million monthly on electricity across its three campuses in Nsukka, Enugu, and Ituku Ozalla.
Prof. Oguejiofor Ujam, acting vice chancellor of the University, disclosed this in a press briefing during the University’s 54th convocation ceremony. He decried the astronomical cost of electricity and how that burns a hole in the pocket of the university institution. He, however, stated that the University has set up a comprehensive strategy to mitigate electricity costs and bring them under control while exploring alternative energy sources.
“We are rigorously implementing energy-saving measures across all campuses, optimising our energy consumption patterns, and promoting energy-efficient practices among staff and students, “Ujam Said.
The Acting VC of UNN further disclosed that the University recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Rural Electrification Agency to generate 10 megawatts of electricity for the University.
“These initiatives are not merely about cost reduction; they are about ensuring a stable and uninterrupted power supply, which is fundamental to supporting our academic, research, and administrative functions. Our commitment to energy transition reflects our dedication to environmental sustainability and fiscal responsibility, paving the way for a more resilient and self-sufficient University.” he said
Additionally, Ujam mentioned the critical role of Information Communications Technology (ICT) in any major educational institution.
