Showbiz Making a Comeback in the East
During the Yuletide, Enugu, Awka, and Owerri were hotspots for entertainment, hosting various music concerts, comedy events, and rave parties. The city of Enugu was set agog with the presence of A-list artists like Davido, Odumodu Blvck, Jeriq, and Phyno.
Anambra welcomed Flavour and Jeriq in two separate music concerts. Owerri hosted Ruger and a troupe of cultural performers, while Onitsha had some upcoming artists indigenous to the state.
The eastern music scene is currently facing an influx of new generation artists. These artists are building their fanbase in the region while exporting music to other parts of the country.
Notable mentions include Kolaboy, Evado, Highstarlavista, Staghe, Rord Kelly, Aguero Banks, Bkay Eastgaad, Ugoccie, and Tuffking. The dominant music genre is a fusion of Rap and drill music, rooted strongly in the native igbo language.
The new generation of artists from the East are redefining the music business. They tapping into their local fanbase and landing foreign endorsement deals. Jeriq, an A-list eastern rapper, landed an endorsement deal with Pepsi, a major milestone.
The Unboxed party highlights a shift in how young people in the East spend their disposable income. State-backed projects like the Solution Funcity hope to tap into the shift, driving a recurring revenue for the state coffers.
