The Anambra State government has directed operatives of the Agunechemba security outfit to stop wearing masks during operations across the state.
Governor Charles Soludo gave the order while addressing commanders and members of the security group.
He said security operatives carrying out duties with covered faces, especially during civil-related operations in towns, create fear among residents and raise suspicion about their activities.
According to him, criminals could take advantage of the use of masks to commit crimes while pretending to be members of the security outfit.
He warned that such acts could damage the image of the agency and create distrust among the people.
The governor stated that the operatives should not be afraid to show their faces because many residents already know them as security personnel within their communities.
He also questioned why some officers would appear in masks during operations but freely move around without them in public places.
Soludo also frowned at the habit of some operatives taking firearms to drinking spots while off duty. He said such conduct was unnecessary and could send the wrong message to members of the public.
He directed commanders of the outfit to make sure the new order banning masks is fully obeyed.
The governor explained that the decision was taken to stop dishonest individuals from using face coverings to carry out violent acts under the name of the security agency.
He also announced that operatives of the group would no longer be allowed to maintain permanent checkpoints on any road in the state.
According to him, checkpoints should not become fixed structures on specific routes.
The governor further instructed the commanders to support the fight against drug dealers and criminal activities in Anambra through intelligence gathering and coordinated operations.
