The Governor of Anambra State, Charles Soludo, has unveiled plans for major urban renewal projects in Nnewi as part of efforts to transform the city and prepare it for future growth.
Soludo disclosed this after spending several hours in Nnewi with members of his team to inspect key locations and assess development needs across the city.
The governor began the tour at the Nnewi Roundabout, where he inspected a mall project that has remained abandoned for nearly 17 years. He said the project would no longer be left idle, adding that his administration plans to convert the facility into a useful project that will serve the public before the end of its tenure.
The inspection also covered the Post Office area, Eme Court Road, and the large stretch of land located between Umudim and Ukpor. According to the governor, the rapid growth of Nnewi necessitates new projects. This is to improve the city’s appearance and provide better facilities for residents.
As part of the plans, the state government intends to develop a central motor park. Other projects include green recreational areas and a multipurpose outdoor arena where residents can relax and participate in social activities.
The True Cost of a Robust Urban Renewal Project
Soludo noted that urban renewal often entails difficult decisions, including the removal of structures that impede development. He recalled that similar actions were taken in Ekwulobia. There, hundreds of buildings, petrol stations, and other structures were removed to make way for development projects. This is aimed at improving the state for future generations.
The governor said many of the projects currently being considered should have been carried out decades ago. He explained that the government is planning ahead for expected population growth. The Anambra government is also committed to rebuilding and modernising major cities across the state.
He assured residents that Nnewi has become a key focus of his administration. He promised that the city would receive the transformation needed to match its status. Nnewi will return to become one of Anambra’s leading commercial centres.
Nnewi is home to many indigenous manufacturers, especially in the automotive and mobility sectors. An urban renewal of the city is a direct investment in its potential. The city can become a special economic zone and a major contributor to Anambra state’s annual revenue and GDP.
