Firstpower Electricity Distribution Company Limited received an interim electricity distribution licence following the issuance of the Order of Transfer of Regulatory Oversight of the Electricity Market to Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC) by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
Firstpower Electricity Disco, a subsidiary of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), is tasked with electricity distribution within Anambra state, and has just received an interim certificate to operate fully by ASERC.
The official issuance of the interim certificate took place on Thursday, 27th November 2025, marking a significant step in the diversification of the power value chain in the region and the arrival of independent players.
The Chairman/CEO, ASERC, Prof. Frank Okafor, supported by the Vice Chairman & Executive Commissioner, Technical Regulation Division of the Commission, Engr. Geoffrey Nwokoye presented the licence to the Managing Director, FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company Limited, Mr. Okechukwu Okafor.
The licence was presented in the company of Engr. Dr. Ernest Mupwaya, who represented the Group Managing Director, EEDC, Engr. Praveen Chorghade, at the event. Firstpower Electricity Disco represents a growing team of corporate bodies in the Southeast region, providing job employment and a fresh alternative to commerce, which dominates most parts of the state.
EEDC remains the major regional player in the southeast sector, working through subsidiaries like Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) and now Firstpower Electricity Distribution Company (FPEDC).
The EEDC is set to compete with a state-backed competitor in Imo state known as the Orashi Electricity Company. The Orashi Electricity project is a product of the “Light up Imo” initiative by the Hope Uzodimma adminstration, promising 24-hour power supply to the Owerri Metropolitan area.
The EEDC and the Orashi Electricity Project would compete for market share in the state, providing Ndi Imo with two alternative sources of electricity, a net positive for Imo state residents.
