Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has announced that plans are progressing to begin direct cargo flights between Enugu and Guangzhou, China, by December as part of efforts to position the state as a major aviation and logistics hub.
Mbah disclosed this in a post on X, stating that the project is being pursued in collaboration with the Federal Government and other partners.
According to the governor, the proposed cargo route is expected to create new business opportunities for companies across the South-East region, ease transportation and logistics challenges, and improve the region’s participation in international trade.
He stated that the initiative is part of a broader plan to transform Enugu into a leading centre for aviation, logistics, and commerce.
The governor also pointed to recent developments in the state’s aviation sector. This includes the launch of Enugu Air. It also includes the ongoing work to upgrade the Akanu Ibiam International Airport into a modern cargo hub.
Mbah said the state government remains focused on providing infrastructure to support businesses. It also hopes to attract investors, generate employment opportunities, and boost economic activity.
The plan is to have a direct cargo connection with Guangzhou, one of China’s major commercial centres. This is expected to strengthen trade links between Nigeria and Asia. It will also improve businesses’ access to global markets operating in the Southeast.
The governor described the development as another step in the state’s long-term vision for economic growth and industrial expansion. The state-backed aviation company, Enugu Air, was launched last year in a grand occasion. The occasion was graced by top Nigerian dignitaries. They include Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. Then Fidelity Bank’s Group MD, Dr Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, and other dignitaries.
The state-backed airline was launched in partnership with Xejet, a private aviation company, and the Enugu State Government. Enugu Air started with a few aircraft. Its management plans to expand its fleet and visit more destinations in due time.
