The Enugu state government has signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), ushering the state into the league of Integrated Smart States Programme for Accelerated Development (2025–2027).

The MOU signing takes the relationship between Enugu and the global developmental organisation to a new level, marking a milestone and pointing towards a promising future for the state.

Enugu governor, Peter Mbah, commented on the development, explaining how it aligns with the state’s plan to eradicate poverty in the near future.

” From the outset, we made a total commitment to eradicating poverty in the state and to achieving a zero-poverty headcount index. We recognise that this ambition can only be realised through collaboration and partnership, which is why this engagement is of immense importance to us.” Says Mbah.

” Transparency and accountability remain central to our governance philosophy, including fund traceability and strict value-for-money principles. This MoU is about ensuring transparent procurement processes and extracting optimal value from every kobo or dollar we spend.” Mbah added.

The parnership according to Mbah, will complement the efforts of the Enugu government in fulfilling its promise to the people and powering inclusive growth and development.

Enugu State joins Abia State in the list of Southeastern States to sign a partnership with the UNDP. The eastern region clearly needs more strategic partnerships with global organisations, as these play a key role in boosting foreign direct investment.

What Does the UNDP do for its Partners?

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) acts as a global development advisor and integrator for its partners. Instead of just providing funding, the UNDP offers a sophisticated operational base to help governments, NGOs, and private entities turn their policy goals into actual results.

Strategic UNDP partners often enjoy Operational and technical support, including Financial Management, procurement and logistics, recruitment and HR and digital inclusion. Other areas of benefit for UNDP partners include Policy ideation and risk assessment for investments.

Unlike other global bodies that just provide funding, the UNDP serves as a partner on the ground, contributing to the core of the partner’s operation and strategy.

Abia State partnered with the UNDP last year to boost strategic economic growth. The agreement focuses on SME development, Digitalisation, Energy, and Industrial expansion, and is signed under its Integrated Smart State of Accelerated Development framework.

Enugu State is joining the list and aims to leverage the offers available to UNDP partners to accelerate growth in the state.
