The Enugu State Government has taken another step in its agricultural development plan with the establishment of the Enugu Nortra Tractor Assembly Plant project located at Park Avenue, GRA, Enugu.
The development was disclosed by Dan Nwomeh, Senior Special Assistant on Media to Governor Peter Mbah, in a post shared on X.
According to him, the facility represents a move away from outdated farming methods to a more mechanised agricultural system across the state.
Nwomeh said Governor Mbah met almost no functional tractors when he assumed office and later approved the purchase of 1,000 tractors from Nortra as part of efforts to improve farming activities in Enugu.
He revealed that 105 tractors are already being used on farms in different parts of the state, while additional units are currently being assembled at the new plant.
The assembly plant reportedly has the ability to produce 10 tractors daily. It also includes a service and repair centre aimed at maintaining the machines and ensuring smooth operations.
The facility also contains a training institute. Here, technicians are being equipped with skills for operating and maintaining the tractors, as well as handling modern farming equipment.
Nwomeh stated that the project is expected to support the 260 farm estates planned across Enugu State. This covers areas such as Uzo-Uwani, Aninri, Ezeagu, Isi-Uzo, Nkanu East, and Igbo-Eze North.
He added that the plant is not only expected to serve Enugu farmers. It will also provide support for neighbouring states, private farmers, and agricultural investors in the region.
The media aide further disclosed that the project is backed by a Danish investment partnership. He described it as part of growing foreign investment interest in Enugu State.
The tractor project marks an additional agricultural initiative by the Mbah administration. This follows his 260 smart farms initiative already in place. Enugu hopes to transform from an administrative capital to a tech manufacturing and agricultural powerhouse.
The Mbah administration is achieving this through a series of strategic partnerships. Then, as well as solo initiatives like the Nortra Tractor Plant Project.
