The Enugu State Government has dismissed a viral message claiming that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) faces an imminent attack, describing the report as false and intended to instill fear among residents and members of the university community.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Malachy Agbo, said the message was created by criminal elements seeking to spread panic and create confusion across the state.
The government stated that similar alarm messages had previously been circulated about different locations in Enugu State, including Holy Ghost, Obollo Afor, Opi, Nsukka, Gariki, and Awgu.
According to the government, those reports were later found to be false, while some of the individuals responsible were identified and prosecuted.
The state government said it is already working with security agencies to trace and arrest those behind the latest false report concerning the university.
It also assured residents that security remains a top priority under Peter Mbah’s administration.
The government noted that major investments have been made in modern security infrastructure, technology, and personnel to improve safety across the state.
The statement added that the state’s security system remains active and capable of responding to threats, stressing that measures are in place to protect lives and property.
Residents, students, and staff of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, were urged to remain calm and continue their normal activities without fear.
The government maintained that there is no credible information indicating any planned attack on the institution and warned against spreading false information that could cause unnecessary panic among the public.
