The Enugu State Government announced that it is launching Enugu Air, its state-owned commercial flight business, with an inaugural flight on Monday, July 7
The Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Governor, Peter Mba, announced the development yesterday, referencing an official statement signed by the state’s Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Obi Ozor. The prospective launch will take place at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, as the Special Guest of Honour.
“Enugu Air will take off with an initial fleet of three Embraer aircraft, E170 and E190 series, selected for their efficiency, comfort, and adaptability to the regional market. “The inaugural routes will establish a ‘golden triangle’ with Enugu at its core, connecting Abuja and Lagos and subsequently extending to Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin, Kano, and other strategic cities across Nigeria and beyond. “
With a strong foundation of innovation and sustainability, we are ready to redefine air travel, instill pride, and elevate Enugu’s prominence on the national and global stage. “Let the countdown begin—Enugu Air is ready for takeoff,” Ozor said
The official statement from the Enugu government stated that the Enugu Air initiative is part of Governor Peter Mba’s blueprint for a modern and urbanized Enugu state. The prospective state carrier looks to take after the success of other state carriers like Ibom Air, owned by Akwa Ibom State.
The announcement drew excitement from Nigerians who asked questions about where to book the inaugural flight and the viability of the terminals at the Akanu Ibiam Enugu Airport. The Airport has long served the eastern region before the building of the Chinua Achebe International Airport in Anambra.
State Carriers Thriving where National Carriers Failed
The success of Ibom Air and the proposed launch of Enugu Air point to a working system for state-funded carriers competing in the Nigerian aviation Industry. Questions of funding and maintenance haunt the dream of a Nigerian-owned National carrier.

Nigeria Air was launched in 2018 by former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika with the goal of reviving the ghost of Nigeria Airways. The Nigeria Air project by the minister was a resounding failure, drawing backlash and claims of fraud from the general public.
In August 2023, Minister Festus Keyamo suspended Nigeria Air, citing it as unrepresentative of Nigeria. By May 2025, the government abandoned the project, with Keyamo stating no public funds would be reinvested.
