Alex Onyia, education influencer and convener of the South East Maths Olympiad, has questioned the progress of Enugu’s Smart Green School Project as the Mbah Administration passes the two-year mark.
Onyia lamented the project’s opacity and slow pace, stating that the number of completed schools at the moment is nowhere near the 250 schools promised by the Mbah administration.
” This government has been in power for 2 years and 7 months, yet not up to 30 smart schools are functional, out of 260 smart schools budgeted. Will they now blame Sujimoto, or has it gone the way of the failed water project? We need answers,” Onyia shared on X.
The 250 smart green schools project made the headlines a few months ago when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission declared a certain Sijubomi Ogundele wanted following a petition from the government of Enugu state.
The Enugu Government accused Ogundele, CEO of Sujimoto LTD, of defrauding the state and abandoning his smart green school project. The case dropped from the limelight days after, and so did the discussion and attention on the 250 smart green school projects by the Enugu Government.
Onyia, who runs an intervention fund for Southeast education, is known for his public advocacy on Education at both international and grassroots levels.
White Elephant Project?
The Smart Green School project by the Mbah administration, lauded as a bold initiative to revamp grassroots education in Enugu State, is at a crossroads. The poor execution of the project has raised doubts and positioned it as just another white elephant.
Reports confirm that the majority of schools are still at the block level and are nowhere near the finish line. The observations warrant concern and validate the questions raised by the education influencer about the issue.
At the time of the report, attempts to get a response from the Enugu Government proved abortive.
