The Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC) has signed four regulatory instruments to improve monitoring, regulation, and efficiency in the Anambra State electricity sector.
The regulatory body also said a strong no to monopoly. It states that the Anambra electricity market is open to all players that can provide value. The four regulatory instruments signed are Business rules, Customer protection regulations, Licensing regulations, and Investment regulations.
ASERC Chairman, Prof. Frank Okafor, revealed that the new regulatory instruments are backed by state legislation. It aligns with laws stipulated in the Anambra State Electricity Law (2025). He added that the new instruments are to the advantage of electricity consumers and investors in the state.
“You are coming here as a businessman, and you intend to invest your resources, and those resources, by law, should also be recovered.
“However, we also know that, for you to recover your investment, there are the consumers and the customers who, ordinarily, have their rights also, and whose rights have to be protected,” he said.
Okafor, addressing the management of Firstpower Electricity Distribution Limited. Okafor warned the organisation that no monopoly status will be conferred on any investor or player in the Anambra State Electricity sector.
As far as he is concerned, the Anambra Market is open to all players. ASERC is leveraging the free-market concept to offer Ndi Anambra the best value for their money.
“There will be nothing like a monopoly. What would be the next step is not a legal monopoly, but a self-achieved monopoly.” Okafor said
“If your service is the best, nobody wants to go to the other one. But if your service is somehow, and you want to rely on the law allowing you to be a monopoly, then you’ll be making a very great mistake,” he added.
Anambra State’s Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, commended the regulatory body for carrying out their duties. He added that the body’s efforts will help the current administration’s industrialisation plans.
