The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South East is holding a stakeholders’ meeting in Enugu to consolidate its growing power base in the region.
Present at the stakeholders’ meeting are the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma; the Governor of Enugu State, Barrister Peter Mbah; the Governor of Ebonyi State, Barrister Francis Nwifuru; and the Deputy Speaker of the 10th House of Assembly, Benjamin Kalu.
Also present are former governors in the south east and a host of south east senators and House of Reps members aligned with the APC. The stakeholders’ meeting examines how to advance the party’s cause in the Southeast region. The party currently has three governors in the region, and it’s gunning for the full package in recent years.
Other agendas on the table include the party’s strategic positioning for success ahead of the 2027 general elections. The APC, despite being largely unpopular in the region, has made serious inroads, leveraging political force from the centre.
Abia state is next in line as the party, through the Deputy Speaker of the House of Reps, Benjamin Kalu, Senator representing Abia North senatorial zone, Orji Uzor Kalu, and former governors of the state, turned up the heat opposing a second term for Labour Party’s Alex Otti.
If the ruling party succeeds in Abia state, the region is likely to fall into the full grasp of the APC following rumours of defection to the party by the Anambra state governor.
Why This Matters
- APC remains the party to beat in 2027, holding all the aces and strategically wielding its influence as the ruling party in the state.
- The Southeast has historically been an adversary to the party. The party’s inroads in the region appear aimed at overturning this fact and converting the region into another extension of its growing power base.
- The APC has three out of five governors in the South-East. The mission to convert the region into a loyal political base is halfway done, and regional stakeholders’ meetings like this set the pace for its success.
