Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has declared that the state is ready to take advantage of the Nigeria Agribusiness and Agro Industrial Development Initiatives (NAADI) to improve its economy and strengthen agriculture and related industries.
He spoke on Wednesday, May 6, when he received a delegation from NAADI led by its Director, Felix Charles, at the Government House in Umuahia.
Otti explained that the state government is open to working with the initiative and is prepared to engage fully with its team to understand how best to apply the programme in Abia.
He noted that his administration has already set goals that align with the direction of the NAADI project and expressed satisfaction that Abia was selected as one of the benefiting states.
The governor also said that real economic growth goes beyond producing raw agricultural goods. He explained that development will be stronger when farm produce is processed. Then added to full value chains that create more jobs and income.
He added that Abia has strong potential in palm oil, cassava, and textiles. Leather works, cocoa, cashew, and rubber are also huge prospects. However, he said these products must be properly processed to deliver better value to the people.
The NAADI delegation said the programme is an FG initiative aimed at increasing participation in agriculture. The program will also train people on value chain development and improving access to international markets for agricultural products.
Felix Charles said the initiative is already running in several states. He said Abia has now become the ninth state selected for its expansion and launch.
He also said the programme will help close gaps in skills and improve agribusiness activities. It will also expand market access and support funding opportunities for farmers and other stakeholders. He assured the state government of the organisation’s readiness to work closely with Abia.
The Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu. Chief of Staff Caleb Ajagba, Commissioner for Trade and Commerce Salome Obiukwu. Special Adviser on Trade and Commerce, Nwaka Inem, and other senior government officials attended the meeting.
