Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma has said that the ongoing reconstruction of Douglas Road in Owerri is part of efforts to reduce traffic problems and improve safety in the area.
In a post on his X page, he explained that the road had long been overcrowded and poorly managed, which encouraged illegal trading, traffic abuse, and criminal activity.
He said this situation affected movement and business in the state capital.
He noted that the poor condition of the road also worsened the problems, as it enabled disorderly use by motorists and street traders.
The governor said the reconstruction is part of the state’s urban renewal programme aimed at improving infrastructure, boosting business activities, and making Owerri more organized and safer.
During an inspection of the project, he said he observed steady progress and expressed satisfaction with the pace of work.
He also said residents and road users were happy with the changes so far, describing the project as one that will improve life in the city once completed.
The Douglas Road is one of the busiest roads in the state and often suffers from traffic congestion amid other issues. The reconstruction of the road will help ease traffic congestion and make life easier for commuters.
The Uzodimma administration will terminate prematurely as he makes his way to the red chambers. He will be representing the Imo West Orlu Zone in the Nigerian Senate. The governor defeated the former governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha, to secure the ticket. He will leave his role as governor a few months before his term ends to resume office in the Senate.
