The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has secured a N2.5 billion Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) grant for the construction and establishment of an ultra-modern agro-research laboratory and demonstration farm.
The project, which adds to the university’s growing infrastructure, was approved by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration with TETFund serving as a vehicle. The agro research lab will modify agricultural training, agribusiness research, and technological innovation within the institution.
UNN’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Uchenna Ortuanya, received an Israeli project execution team earlier this week, stating that the grant reflects the university’s unwavering dedication to advancing research to contribute to the country’s growth.
“By creating a nexus where advanced laboratory research meets practical demonstration, UNN is positioning itself to lead Nigeria’s drive toward sustainable food security and agricultural technology. We are immensely grateful to TETFund for recognising and supporting our vision.”, Ortuanya said.
Afri-Fruits Limited gets the nod
Afri-fruits Limited, an Israeli firm, is the designated contractor for the project and received an official handover of the project site from the university. The official event was a fanfare attended by a section of the school’s management, including the dean of the Faculty of Agriculture.
Mr Reuven Cohen, Managing Director of Afri-fruits Limited, expressed gratitude for being part of a legacy project at one of Nigeria’s most prestigious universities. He assured the school’s management that the project would be executed in accordance with international standards.
The federal university pledged full cooperation with Afri-Fruits Limited towards the seamless execution and completion of the project.
