The Umuahia Central Bus Terminal, a flagship transportation infrastructure initiated by the Alex Otti administration, is nearing completion.

The bus terminal, which represents a major shift from the informal bus parks to modernized transportation hubs, is fast becoming a trend in the eastern region, with Enugu State launching five last year.

The project is in its final stages of completion and is already transforming the landscape of the Abia State capital. The government has mandated that all existing, scattered motor parks within Umuahia move their operations to this central hub to reduce traffic congestion at the Isi gate axis.

Inspired by global hubs like London’s Paddington Station and the Oshodi Bus Terminal in Lagos, the project aims to centralize all transport activities into a single, organized location.

    Full Modern Transport Experience

The Umuahia Bus Terminal is not just a location for buses to meet up and offload. It encompasses an entire ecosystem of the modern transport experience. The bus terminal integrates bus transportation and the Umuahia Railway Station, which has been relocated to the terminal site.

The complex also includes a shopping plaza, a cinema, and children’s playgrounds. It also features escalators and digital e-ticketing systems. The terminal is designed for round-the-clock service, with dedicated waiting spaces for late-night travelers.

It serves as a primary hub for Abia State’s fleet of electric buses, featuring 10 solar-powered charging stations.

The Umuahia Bus Terminal complements the already functioning Abia electric bus scheme. The electric bus scheme was developed by a partnership between the Abia state government and Coscharis Group.

The promising Abia Electric Bus scheme is off to a difficult start. The transit scheme struggles to keep up with demand in the two cities of Aba and Umuahia.

The current hike in fuel prices has increased the number of passengers on foot, hence mounting pressure on the electric bus scheme.
