The flagship radio channel of the Independent People of Biafra, Radio Biafra, is back on the airwaves in Akwa Ibom after a long break in transmission in the area.
Radio Biafra (CHK 102.1 FM) is reportedly live in Ikot Ekpene, Afaha Ikot, Obot-Akara, Uyo Obio, Abak, and its surrounding areas, broadcasting IPOB programs and updates to the communities in Akwa Ibom State.
Other parts of Abia State, such as the Nlagu and Ndiakata axis, also confirmed the reception of the radio service after a brief break in transmission. Radio Biafra remains the main medium of communication for the IPOB community, broadcasting worldwide to the IPOB faithful, updating the community on updates on the ongoing trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB leader.
Other agendas pursued by the radio channel include a call for a referendum in eastern Nigeria for the indigenous people of the region to decide their fate on their continued existence in Nigeria. The channel also educates its audience on Eastern Nigerian regional and political history.
Radio Biafra was founded in 2009 by the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, from London. Radio Biafra Broadcasts via shortwave and the internet in English and Igbo, targeting southeastern Nigeria.
At its core, the channel airs forceful commentaries on Igbo marginalization, calls for self-determination, and critiques of the Nigerian state.
Kanu founded Radio Biafra when he was still a member of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) under Ralph Uwazuruike. In the coming years, he broke away to find IPOB and personally anchored shows streamed on Facebook, promoting non-violent resistance like election boycotts and sit-at-home protests.
Despite jamming and shutdowns by the Nigerian state, Radio Biafra has remained on the airwaves, reaching new areas and growing its audience.
The restoration of broadcasting in Akwa Ibom aligns with the vision of the IPOB movement to unite the people of the defunct Biafran Republic, which lasted for three years before it fell in 1970.
