Highlights of Otti’s Administration So Far
The administration of Dr. Alex Chioma Otti has raised a massive awareness on how effective governance can be within a short period of time. Governor Otti has reached new heights of popularity, with his fanbase extending beyond Abia State to several parts of the country. Some highlights of his administration include.
Massive Infrastructure Renewal & Road Construction
The administration has aggressively targeted the road infrastructure deficit, particularly in Aba, the state’s commercial hub, and Umuahia, the capital city. Under Otti’s “Zero Potholes” framework, his administration has completed over 414 road projects totaling more than 860 kilometers. The roads are fully equipped with modern drainage systems and solar-powered streetlights.
Civil Service Reforms & Financial Transparency
Otti successfully decentralized and digitized the state’s payroll through an intensive biometric verification system. This exercise effectively eliminated thousands of “ghost workers,” allowing the government to maintain its commitment to paying civil servants and pensioners regularly and promptly.
Fiscal Policy
Furthermore, through strict fiscal discipline, the administration drastically reduced the inherited state debt profile. The debt profile was reduced by approximately 60%. This move Abia from 17th to 4th place in the national BudgIT state fiscal sustainability rankings.
Transportation Reforms
To combat rising transportation costs and address urban mobility, the administration launched the Abia Green Shuttle Initiative. The state deployed fleets of eco-friendly electric buses across Aba and Umuahia, servicing hundreds of thousands of commuters. The administration supported its transport scheme with a series of Urban bus terminals. This includes the famous Umuahia Bus Terminal, now known as the Prof Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal.
Education & Healthcare Upgrades
Following the declaration of free and compulsory basic education, public school enrollment in Abia skyrocketed by over 300,000 pupils. To handle this surge, the government recruited over 5,000 new teachers and launched modern Smart Schools equipped with digital tools. In healthcare, the administration retrofitted and modernized 277 Primary Healthcare Centers across the state’s 184 wards.
Otti faces reelection in 2027, up against a well-oiled APC opposition led by Nigeria’s deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu.
