The annual traditional Onitsha Ofala festival and celebration commemorating the traditional ruler of Onitsha, HRH Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, is slated to hold from October 17th to 18th at the commercial city of Onitsha.
The 2025 edition, themed “Njiko na Ntachi” (Unity and Perseverance), is proposed to be a vibrant tapestry of Igbo heritage, topping previous editions.
The annual event, culminating in the New Yam Festival, will honour the Obi of Onitsha through ritual renewals of covenant with ancestors and subjects. Kicking off with the Owuwaji feast and cultural workshops, the event would escalate to its zenith on October 17–18 with Iru Ofala and Azu Ofala.
The string of events would be sponsored by Globacom, Zenith Bank, Guinness, and media giants THISDAY and Arise TV. The event amplified its new media reach via a new Ofala Mobile App for live streams and insights.

Community initiatives shone through medical outreaches, youth carnivals, art exhibitions featuring African sculptures, and empowerment programs for women and entrepreneurs
With the festival expected to peak on the 17th of October, the Ofala festival has represented the city of Onitsha, highlighting resilience and reinforcing Onitsha’s 16th-century legacy as a commercial and cultural powerhouse.
