Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, hosted a high-stakes dinner with leaders of Nigeria’s health sector to discuss Ebonyi’s health sector.
Aside from the Chief Host, Governor Francis Nwifuru, other dignitaries at the dinner include the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Daju Kachollom S. (mni), alongside her distinguished entourage, including Chief Medical Directors and key stakeholders in Nigeria’s health sector.
The dinner event followed the flag-off of a massive cancer screening exercise for 1,000 residents in the state. At the dinner, Nwifuru called for an upgrade of the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki. He argued that the hospital serves not only Ebonyi but the wider South East region.
” While we acknowledge the Federal Government’s contributions, there is a compelling need for further upgrades, expansion, and enhanced support to meet the growing healthcare demands of our population,” Nwifuru said
The barrister-turned Governor also called for more Federal Medical institutions in the state. This, he said, will meet the region’s needs and provide jobs for Ebonyi residents.
” Our commitment remains unwavering to provide accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare for every Ebonyi citizen. Together with the Federal Government and critical stakeholders, we will continue to advance our shared vision of a healthier and more prosperous Ebonyi State.” He added.
Ebonyi state, under Francis Nwifuru, has been marked by isolated initiatives with very few reports on infrastructure. This could be attributed to the fact that the previous administration embarked on heavy infrastructural projects, leaving little room for the next administration.
Aside from Health, Governor Nwifuru leads an educational initiative which grants scholarships to Ebonyi indigenes. The scholarship is for study in European countries across various courses. The education program represents a shift in Ebonyi government policy. The shift from infrastructure to human-focused initiatives aims at improving the state’s HDI.
