Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has called for a review of the courses offered in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions to make them more relevant to today’s world.
He made the remarks during a visit by the new leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). He said there is a need for universities and other higher institutions to focus more on programmes that can help students solve real problems and add value to the economy.
According to him, some courses being taught in schools no longer match the needs of the modern job market. He noted that this has made it difficult for many graduates to find good jobs after completing their studies.
The governor said quality education should not be only about earning certificates or gaining admission to school. He explained that true quality education should produce graduates who are skilled, productive, and able to support themselves and the country.
Nwifuru also pointed out that Nigeria is facing challenges of unemployment and underemployment among young people. He said schools need to adjust their programmes to focus more on practical knowledge, skills, and areas that can support development and innovation.
Nwifuru added that improving the education system will help young people. They will become more self-reliant and create new opportunities for growth in the country.
He called on students, school leaders, education regulators, and policymakers to work together. This will make higher education more relevant to current realities. Governor Nwifuru is fast becoming an advocate for education at both the state and national levels.
Nwifuru Floats FON Scholarship
In Ebonyi, he funded and facilitated the FON scholars initiative, sending Ebonyi students to the UK and Scotland for studies. This is part of the state’s strategy to improve its Human Development Index (HDI) and complement infrastructural development.
Ebonyi State has one of the lowest HDI indices in the region. Its indigenes are usually economic migrants to other states in the region, creating economic pressure.
