The National Universities Commission has granted Transatlantic University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Umuchukwu, an operational licence, paving the way for the private university to begin full operations and admit students.
TMU received its operational licence and accreditation clearance at the NUC headquarters in Abuja, where the NUC Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, presented it to the founder of TMU, Dr Godwin Maduka.
The operational approval clears the university for admission into three faculties offering 17 accredited academic programmes. The accreditation follows a long vetting process with the NUC team visiting the site back in 2024.
The NUC was impressed with the institution’s facilities, including its landmark status as Africa’s tallest medical university building. The university also presents a good example of a remittance project, given that the school was built by a diasporan Nigerian who looked to invest in his country.
TMU has four major faculties, according to its website. Faculty of Science, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Basic Medical and Allied Health Sciences, and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The four faculties house 28 different departments, ranging from the Department of Nursing, Physics, Medical Laboratory Science, and others
At the time of the report, there is no confirmed information on whether the university offers Medicine and Surgery.
