Nnamdi Kanu Shows Defiance Under Pressure, Set to be Judged Nov 20

The leader of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, faced a turbulent day in court today as he refused to open his defence, claiming that charges brought against him are not backed by the Nigerian constitution. He is to be judged on November 20.

It was the Federal Republic of Nigeria vs the IPOB leader in what turned out to be a heated day at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Nnamdi Kanu, against court orders, refused to open a defence questioning the law on which he is being tried.

In a heated altercation, the IPOB leader pushed a DSS operative as seen in a viral video while loudly stating to the judge, ” You have no law”. The court proceedings for the day were presided over by Justice John Tsoho, who failed to explain to the accused on what law he was being tried.

Nnamdi Kanu, who was given a six-day window to open his defence and call his witnesses, exhausted the window period without doing any. Justice Tsoho held that Kanu’s non-utilization of the opportunity means he cannot claim denial of fair hearing rights under the constitution.

Justice Tsoho adjourned the final judgment of the case to November 20th, 2025, in what could be a tumultuous ending to a 5-year trial.

IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu is facing terrorism charges after being kidnapped in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria under the Muhammadu Buhari administration. The Nigerian state has failed to give concrete evidence of terrorism against the IPOB leader, with the charges against the separatist leader heavily perceived as trumped-up and a case of dirty politics.

    • Nnamdi Kanu has been in detention since 2021, enduring a long and gruelling court process which finally seems to be coming to an end by November 20. The final court judgement would be a very sensitive issue, whichever way it turns out.
    • The verdict from the IPOB’s leader trial is set to add to the current tension in the country after the US designated it a Country of Particular Concern, a term the US president defined as a legal definition.
