The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has signed an agreement with the Enugu State government for an operational lease of the NCC Industrial Park and NCC Learning Centre in Enugu as part of the state’s strategic shift to a digital economy.
Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, signed the agreement with the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida. Also present were members of the Commission’s Board and Management during a visit to Enugu State for the project.
The partnership will facilitate the operation of the NCC Industrial Park and its Learning Centre, adding to Enugu’s efforts to boost its digital economy and foster tech innovation in the state among its young demographic.
The NCC delegation took advantage of its visit to tour the smart school initiative in the state, as it aligns with the broader national digitalisation strategy in which the NCC is a key stakeholder.
The Smart School initiative by the Enugu Government looks to leverage technology in everyday education, preparing students for a new world of opportunities. The NCC also supervised the implementation of technology-enabled education in the state as it prepares students for a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Enugu’s Bet on a Digital Economy
The Mbah administration has made bold steps to boost the state’s digital economy, leveraging technology in Education, Business, manufacturing, and even agriculture. The Mbah administration signed a partnership with China’s Haier Factory to set up a factory in the state to manufacture gadgets and smartphones.
The state also has an active Smart Farm initiative across the 260 political wards in the state alongside the Smart School initiative already in play. Enugu has also hosted key tech events in promising areas such as Web3 and broader innovation.
Enugu is historically the capital of the old Eastern Region and is widely seen as the region’s administrative headquarters. Mbah’s strategic bets hope to diversify the state’s economy and generate new streams of revenue for the foreseeable future.
