The Labour Party gubernatorial candidate, George Moghalu, has suspended his campaign for one week in honour of the victims of the Onitsha main market chaos brought about by the high-handedness of operatives of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) brigade.
The Labour Party flagbearer visited Onitsha Main Market, Emeka Offor Plaza, today to commiserate with Ndi Anambra on the tragic shooting incident, which left a pregnant woman dead and many injured.
Reacting to the tragic incident, Moghalu lamented the recurring pattern of extrajudicial killings by state-backed groups put in place by the Prof Chukwuma Soludo administration.
” From Udo-Gachi to Aka Ọdọ, and now OCHA Brigade, Anambra has been witnessing a disturbing pattern of killings and violence. This is no longer governance; this is tragedy. For the past three years, our state has been drowning in negative headlines—killings, bloodshed, kidnapping, and fear everywhere.” Moghalu stated, decrying the situation.
“Our people no longer feel safe going to the market, walking the streets, or even sitting in their own homes. We are now living on a battlefield, where citizens are gunned down not by criminals in the bush, but by those wearing government uniforms.” He added.
The Labour Party flagbearer lamented the growing insecurity and new reality of Anambra state under Soludo, stating that the state is no longer what it used to be.
“This is not the Anambra of our dreams. How long shall we continue like this? How long shall the lives of our people be wasted by a government that has no compassion, empathy, or conscience? A government that cannot protect its citizens has no moral right to ask for their votes.” Mogahlu complained.
The Labour Party man held a minute’s silence for the deceased while pledging to offset the medical bills of the injured receiving treatment in the hospital. He promised to put an end to the menace if elected on November 8.
He added that Security in his administration would not be a source of oppression to the people, and no security outfit would bear arms except the vigilantes.
