Necessity, they say, is the mother of invention. The story of Chief Godwin Okeke, Owner of GUO Motors, is an interesting one worth sharing and documenting.

As the dark days of the Nigerian Civil War came to an end, the country was rife with new opportunities.

The Igbos who bore the brunt of the war were quietly returning to their places of origin from their hideouts, and there were lots of movements to and fro the now defunct Republic of Biafra.

It was in this atmosphere that a Young man in eastern Nigeria, armed with his father’s pickup truck, envisioned what would become a transgenerational transportation company shaping Nigeria’s business climate and creating jobs for thousands.

Before we dive into his business journey, let us touch on Chief Okeke’s early life and humble beginnings.

    Birth and Early Life:

Chief Dr Sir Godwin Ubaka Okeke, popularly known as GUO, the owner of GUO Motors, was born on June 6, 1949, at Iyi-Enu Hospital in Ogidi, Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria, into a family where his father was a textile merchant and his mother traded foodstuffs. He was born into an Anglican family and continued in the faith, rising to the rank of Knight in the Order of Nigeria.

At a young age, Godwin was very business-minded and wasn’t big on school or studies. He dropped out of secondary school to pursue business, a decision he believes was pivotal in turning him into a magnet for business today.

Start of Business Career and Birth of GUO Transport

Immediately after the Nigerian Civil War ended in 1970, the young Okeke began his transportation career by using his father’s Peugeot 404 to convey passengers from Onitsha to Enugu, capitalising on the scarcity of vehicles at the time.

He learnt the rudiments of the transport business at this time, which came in handy after he eventually started his own Transport company and started hiring drivers.

Ten years after running his Sole transport business with his father’s car, Chief Okeke founded GUO Transport Company Limited as a division of G.U. Okeke & Sons Ltd, with “GUO” standing for Godwin Ubaka Okeke; it has grown into one of Nigeria’s largest intercity transport providers serving over 200 destinations. The new Owner of GUO Motors grew the business using his experience as a sole transporter for nearly a decade.

    Business Expansion and Political Career

Okeke diversified into multiple sectors, serving as Chairman/CEO of Anambra Motor Manufacturing Company (ANAMMCO), and holding board positions in commerce, hospitality, banking, manufacturing, real estate, and education, building a conglomerate focused on integrity and hard work.

Aside from business, Chief Okeke also took a shot at politics, running for the Governor of Anambra State once. He is also a community leader who has always remained a key stakeholder in security matters in Anambra State.

According to him, he was pivotal in securing Anambra State and its market areas in the early days of commerce in the state, making it possible for Onitsha to have one of the biggest markets in West Africa.

    Personal Life, Family and Marriage:

In 1976, he married Lady Dr Patricia Obiageli Okeke (née Ozoh) from Umuru, Adazi-Ani; their union is blessed with six sons, two daughters, and over twenty grandchildren, while his wife runs Supreme Knowledge Schools in Nkpor, Onitsha.

His children are key pillars in the transport company at the moment, taking key decisions and establishing the right networks. Aside from his biological children, Chief Okeke also has numerous adopted children whom he is training in education and thousands of families who depend on him for their daily bread.

In his leisure time, Chief Okeke enjoys tennis and is an avid member of the Onitsha Sports Club.

    Philanthropic Foundation

Through the Godwin & Patricia Okeke Foundation, he provides extensive support, including scholarships at all educational levels, the construction of university facilities, and serving as a patron of associations that aid blind and deaf students in Anambra State.

The billionaire transporter has provided Support for Disabled Communities by providing voluntary assistance to the blind, deaf, and dumb, funding education, meals, medical care, and building hostels for about 50 students, viewing it as a divine statutory obligation.

His Onitsha home at GRA is a mecca to people seeking financial assistance. He tends to strangers every morning, listening to their problems and granting them their wishes.

Last year, he constructed classrooms, hostels, and learning theatres for less-privileged and disabled children in Anambra, ensuring access to quality education, teachers, accommodation, and nutrition for underserved populations.

    National Honours and Titles

Okeke holds the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), along with chieftaincy titles and honorary doctorates, recognising his contributions to Nigeria’s economy, transportation, and community development.

He is also a Knight in the Anglican Church, a much-deserved recognition of his commitment and contributions to the Anglican Diocese of Onitsha.

    Key Events and Commentary

In August 2009, Chief Okeke was kidnapped in Onitsha after church service; he negotiated with captors, was released after a ransom, and later testified in court, highlighting the security risks faced by prominent Nigerian businessmen. This was a key highlight, highlighting his involvement in state security.

In recent times, Chief Okeke, aside from being a billionaire transporter, also serves as an elder statesman pontificating on Nigerian issues.

Last week, he praised Igbo youths for their calm response to Nnamdi Kanu’s life sentence. He appealed to President Bola Tinubu for a political solution and pardon to reduce regional tensions.

He defended the presence of military and police checkpoints in the Southeast, arguing they are preferable to threats from bandits and kidnappers despite complaints of extortion, while calling for better security management.

As a pioneer in Nigeria’s transport system, Chief Okeke faces competition from other transport companies and must constantly reinvent the company to keep pace with the times.

A recent upgrade was the digitisation of the GUO Transport booking process, introducing online booking and Guo Logistics.

This has helped the transport company remain at the top of the Nigerian transport industry.
