Governor Peter Mbah has congratulated Chief Ikeje Asogwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) after his victory in the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election, describing the result as a clear sign of the party’s strong acceptance in the state.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Asogwa the winner of the election held on Saturday for the senatorial seat previously held by the late Senator Okey Ezea of the Labour Party, who died in November 2025 after a brief illness.
The district covers Nsukka, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South, Uzo-Uwani, Igbo-Etiti, and Udenu local government areas.
INEC Returning Officer, Professor Christian Ezeibe, announced that Asogwa secured 162,360 votes, defeating Nestor Ezeme of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 9,299 votes.
Mbah described the outcome as a strong political statement from the people of the district, saying the result shows growing support for the APC across Enugu State.
He said the victory reflects the people’s choice for better representation and praised Asogwa as a leader who has served his community well and earned the public’s trust.
The governor also noted that Asogwa’s role at the national level would help improve cooperation between the state and the federal government and support the delivery of development projects to the area.
Enugu became an APC state last year after its governor, Peter Mbah, defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling party. Mbah claimed that he wants to position the state and align it with the centre to secure greater benefits.
Enugu is the latest Southeast state to join the ruling party, taking APC’s tally in the state to 3. The states of Abia and Anambra are the only two left out, with Anambra’s governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, tilting towards the APC recently.
