Abia State PDP Guber aspirant, Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, met with the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Barrister Julius Abure, sparking rumours of defection to the Labour Party.
Igbokwe, a top Abia state politician and PDP stalwart, met with Julius Abure in a closed-door meeting in Abuja, stirring speculations on a possible move to join the Abure-led faction of the Labour Party.

Sources revealed that present in the meeting were the Labour Party’s Vice Chairman for the Southeast, Chief Ceekay Igara, and a former member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Kelechi Onwuzuruike.

Political speculators believe the presence of Igara, the Labour Party Vice Chairman, in the southeast indicates a political play which might see Igbokwe run for the Abia state governorship position under the Labour Party.

The speculation aligns with the internal crisis in the Labour Party, which sees the party divide itself into two factions.

Mayor Igbokwe, who finished second in the 2023 PDP Governorship primaries, is a notable figure in the state. He recently launched two regional radio stations in the state, attracting the likes of pop star Davido to the official launch of the radio stations.

The Abia state Governor, Alex Otti, remains a member of the Labour Party despite speculations about defecting to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or other coalitions ahead of the 2027 elections.

Otti has repeatedly affirmed his loyalty to the LP, with the latest happening during an interactive session with the Abia State Global Economic Council in Umuahia,
