Abia All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Mascort Uzor Kalu, has picked up the nomination form for Abia gubernatorial candidacy under the APC.
Kalu’s move signals the first shot ahead of the 2027 Abia gubernatorial primaries and marks the active commencement of party politics in the state. The APC structure in Abia, under the leadership of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, is vying to seize power from a weakened Labour Party, which has only Alex Otti as its highest office holder.
Alex Otti has remained in the Labour Party despite the defection of his political ally, Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress. He is banking on his growing organic support and the bravery of the masses to withstand the onslaught of federal might that the APC has planned for the state.
The APC structure in Abia state is backed by the association of past governors. This association includes Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu and Mr Theodore Orji. The three ex-governors, all now APC bigwigs, are throwing their weight behind the party. This is despite the general public’s lack of approval.
Alex Otti is banking on the will of the people and Nigerians by extension to win reelection. He also has the power of incumbency, which he will wield to mobilise grassroots support for his cause.
Mascort Uzor Kalu’s announcement and move mark the beginning of Abia Guber politics. The APC is reportedly planning to field Benjamin Kalu as its main candidate in 2027. Kalu has earlier said that he doesn’t have any personal plans to run. However, he will consider it if his party gives him the nod.
Abia State and Anambra State remain the only states outside the APC’s grasp in the eastern region. Anambra State seems to be tilting towards the party. The governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, recently paid a visit to the APC Chairman.
Abia state remains the only adamant state. Alex Otti is set to attend the Labour Party Congress as the highest-ranking office holder in the party.
