Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has hosted the Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Miriam Morales Palmero, at the National Assembly for talks focused on science, technology, and development.
Kalu announced the visit on his X page, saying he received the ambassador, accompanied by the Deputy Ambassador, Ana Flavia Gómez Pavot.
” Today, I was delighted to receive the Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Miriam Morales Palmero, alongside the Deputy Ambassador, Amb. Ana Flavia Gómez Pavot, on a courtesy visit to the House of Representatives,” Kalu said
The discussions focused on building stronger cooperation in areas such as healthcare technology, biotechnology research, digital health systems, smart agriculture, education technology, trade systems, tourism platforms, and cultural exchange, leveraging modern tools.
Both sides also considered activating the Nigeria–Cuba Friendship Group in the National Assembly as a channel to support joint projects, the sharing of innovations, and knowledge transfer between institutions in both countries.
Kalu said the House of Representatives is ready to explore partnerships that can connect Nigeria’s large digital market, young tech-driven population, and growing innovation space with Cuba’s strengths in medical research, biotechnology development, and education systems.
He added that both countries share a vision of using innovation and cooperation to improve services, grow investment opportunities, and strengthen international collaboration.
Last year, Kalu was at the World Trade Organization parliamentary conference, where he pushed for more focus on digital trade in shaping opportunities for youths and entrepreneurs
Kalu, in the 55th session of the steering committee, proposed two key initiatives to strengthen global digital trade governance. A Legislative Tracking Mechanism for digital legislations worldwide and a Model Digital Trade Legislative Toolkit for developing country parliaments.
The latter proposal aims to provide best-practice templates and policy options to help craft pro-development digital economy laws aligned with regional and global frameworks.
