The Deputy Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, decorated Abia-born Rear Admiral Chinonyerem Oji alongside other newly promoted Rear Admirals in Abuja.

The Nigerian Navy at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja promoted Rear Admiral Chinonyerem Oji from Oboro, Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, alongside other rear admirals, after a selection process by the Nigerian Naval institution. Benjamin Kalu, also from Abia state, graced the event and decorated the newly promoted officers.

Reacting to the event, Kalu congratulated the Abia-born rear admiral alongside other newly promoted admirals, describing their new ranks as well-deserved.

” I congratulate Rear Admiral Oji on this well-deserved promotion, a reflection of years of exceptional service to our nation. His dedication through the years has been truly inspiring. I commend his hard work and professionalism in our maritime security and national development,” says Kalu.

” I wish him, alongside all newly promoted officers, even greater success as they continue to make a significant impact on the Nigerian Navy for the benefit of our citizens,” he added.

The Promotion Process to Rear Admiral in the Nigerian Navy is highly competitive. The journey begins with commissioning as a Sub-Lieutenant after the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) or the Direct Short Service.

Officers progress through mandatory sea time, professional courses completed by exemplary performance appraisals. To obtain the Captain rank, candidates must have spent 20 to 24 years in service and commanded a major warship or held key staff appointments.

The Nigerian Navy Promotion Board, chaired by the Chief of Naval Staff, shortlists eligible Captains based on seniority, merit, vacancy slots, and federal character balance. Finally, approval rests with the President as Commander-in-Chief, upon recommendation by the Minister of Defence and endorsement by the Armed Forces Council.

Upon completion of the entire process, successful officers are decorated with the Rear Admiral insignia and assigned as Flag Officers commanding training commands, naval bases, or joint task forces.
