The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the aegis of the Directorate of State has memoed members of the IPOB family in the diaspora, urging them to prepare for rallies and protests calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu as his judgment day draws close.
The memo signed by Mazi Chika Edoziem, Head of the Directorate of State of IPOB, urged members of IPOB in diaspora to put machinery in place to organise rallies demanding the release of the IPOB leader, who has been held by Nigeria’s secret police for more than 4 years.
” Our demand for his immediate release is anchored on the fact that agitation for self-determination is not a crime but rather a recognised and guaranteed human right for the indigenous people all over the world,” the memo read in parts.
IPOB DOS argued that this universal concept of self-determination as a human right also applies to the Biafran people, whom Nnamdi Kanu was leading a self-determination cause on their behalf before his kidnap, extradition, and detention.
The IPOB DOS expects members of the IPOB family in diaspora to swing into action on receiving the memo and kick-start a series of activities, including the rallies and protests in diaspora. This, they believe, is the right step to take given the turn of events in the Nigerian courts.
Yesterday, Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB leader, filed a motion for a continuation of his trial against a predetermined judgment date set by Nigeria’s Justice Omotosho in his last appearance at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Justice Omotosho ruled that judgment on the ensuing legal process will be delivered on November 20, putting an end to Nigeria’s case with Nnamdi Kanu. Kanu is facing charges of terrorism as the founder of the separatist movement in eastern Nigeria.
Kanu was kidnapped in Kenya during his visit to meet a separatist leader there and was extradited to Nigeria under the orders of the Nigerian government. He has been detained at the DSS headquarters in Abuja since 2021.
