This article explains how to cancel auto-renewal on MTN and prevent the MTN system from continuously charging your account. The MTN auto-renewal feature automatically charges your account as soon as your data or airtime runs out. This feature is mainly for high-income earners who always have money in their accounts and don’t mind occasional impromptu deductions.

The auto-renewal feature is frowned upon by low-income earners who don’t want money to be deducted from their accounts without their knowledge. Hence, the question of how to cancel auto-renewal on MTN is a popular one, and this article will discuss this in full.

How to Cancel Auto Renewal on MTN

To cancel auto-renewal on MTN in 2026, use the unified *312# USSD code, which has replaced older codes such as *131#.

    Using USSD (The Quickest Way)

Dial *312# on your phone and follow these steps:

    • Select Option 1 (Data Plans).
    • Select Option 10 (Manage Data).
    • Select Option 3 (Cancel Auto-renewal).
    • Choose the specific active bundle you wish to opt out of. You will receive a confirmation SMS once the transaction is successful.

    Using SMS

If you know the specific code for your data plan, you can send NO + [Bundle Code] to 312. For example:

    • Monthly 1.5GB: Text NO106 to 312.
    • Weekly 750MB: Text NO103 to 312.
    • General Stop: To stop all data renewals, text STOPDATA to 312.

    Value-Added Services (VAS)

For non-data subscriptions, such as CallerTunez or News alerts, dial *305# to view and unsubscribe from all active services.

    How Many Nigerians Use MTN

MTN remains the largest telecommunications provider in Nigeria, having been one of the first major telcos to enter the Nigerian market. Nigeria, being the most populous country in Africa, insinuates that MTN is arguably the largest Telecommunications provider in Africa by market share.

MTN in 2026 has an active subscriber base of 19.9 million lines, with similar projections for data subscribers and active callers. This puts MTN ahead of its competitors like Airtel and Glo and establishes MTN as the go-to service provider in Nigeria.

MTN has a significant footprint in Africa and is heavily present in West African countries such as Ghana, Benin, and Togo.
