Borrowing airtime from Airtel or your telco of choice is an important function that comes in handy. This helps customers access data or airtime when they run out of money. It could be an emergency or a genuine lack of funds at the moment. The idea of the feature is to keep the customer connected to the rest of the world by providing airtime or data in credit.

This feature is a strong customer retention feature, as customers reward brands that look out for them during rainy days. It also aligns with the current purchasing power in Nigeria, which has seriously dropped as inflation bites in the West African country.

The Borrowing of Airtime is an austerity measure marketing stunt that seems to have aligned perfectly with the Nigerian market. It is equivalent to the sachetization of Nigerian consumables by FMCGs. Daily essentials and consumables in Nigeria have been reduced to sachets to meet the drop in purchasing power of Nigerians.

Major retail outlets and FDI companies like Shoprite and GlaxosmithKline have pulled out from the country in the last two years. All the economic indices point to less disposable income in Nigerian pockets, hence austerity measures in all sectors. The option to borrow airtime and data is the telco equivalent of such measures.

All major telcos like MTN, Airtel, T2, and Glo offer their customers the option to borrow airtime and data. This article, however, focuses on how to borrow Airtime from Airtel in 2026.

Borrowing Airtime on most Telcos now operates on a harmonized USSD code across the board. However, Airtel has its own Airtel Extra Credit service alongside the harmonised USSD Code system.

Here are the main ways to borrow airtime from Airtel

    Using the USSD Code

    • Dial *303# on your Airtel line.
    • Select the “Borrow Credit” or “Extra Credit” option from the menu.
    • Choose the amount you wish to borrow based on your current eligibility, e.g., ₦50, ₦100, ₦500, etc.
    • Confirm your selection. The airtime will be credited to your account instantly.

Quick Dial: If you know exactly how much you want to borrow, you can dial *303*amount#e.g., *303*200# to borrow ₦200.

    Using the MyAirtel App

If you have a smartphone and an active data connection:

    1. Open the MyAirtel App.
    2. On the dashboard, look for the “Borrow Airtime” or “Extra Credit” icon.
    3. The app will display the maximum amount you are eligible for.
    4. Select your desired amount and tap “Confirm.”

Eligibility and Costs of the Package

To qualify for a loan in 2026, you generally need to meet these criteria:

    • Active Status: Your SIM must be registered, NIN-linked, and active for at least 3 months.
    • Recharge History: You should have a consistent monthly recharge pattern, typically at least ₦200 per month.
    • No Debt: You must have paid off any previous airtime or data loans.
    • Service Fee: Airtel charges a 15% service fee on most loans (except for the ₦25 loan, which may carry a 20% fee.
