The member representing Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency, Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, has joined the Labour Party.
Ikwechegh disclosed this to newsmen yesterday after a closed-door meeting with Abia State Governor Alex Otti at the governor’s office.
“I visited the Governor this evening to receive his blessings, as you may or may not know, I have received my Labour Party Card as a new member of the party,” Hon. Ikwechegh stated.
The federal lawmaker explained that his decision to join the Labour Party stems from his admiration for Alex Otti and his leadership style. He stated that Otti’s leadership style aligns with his political ideology, hence his move to join him at the Labour Party.
Ikwechegh’s decamping from APGA to the Labour Party adds to the party’s growing fortune in Abia State. Alex Otti has refused to leave the Labour Party despite the party losing one of its brightest stars, former Anambra Governor Peter Obi.
A favourable court judgment denouncing the Julius Abure-led faction in the Labour Party renewed Otti’s faith in the party. This informed his choice to retain the platform for his reelection campaign.
The court judgment recognised the Nenadi Usman leadership faction, which is in cahoots with Alex Otti. This Court order helped Otti gain significant control of the Labour Party as the party’s highest-ranking officeholder.
Otti faces stiff competition from the ruling APC party in the state. The party is led by the Deputy Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives, Hon Benjamin Kalu. The party just held its state congress, electing a new state executive. It seeks to consolidate plans to strengthen its structure in Abia State.
Otti’s reelection hinges on his organic support and political appeal. This political appeal follows his impressive administrative run in his first tenure as Abia state governor.
