The Abia State government approved a one-time 25,000 Transport and Logistics allowance for new teachers in the state in line with Governor Otti mandate for education.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Goodluck Ubochi, revealed in a statement that the Governor Otti initiative was a welcome one targeted at easing life for newly recruited teachers and helping them settle into the new roles.
This allowance is a token of encouragement from the government to show that we value the contribution of our teachers right from day one.
“It is also in line with Governor Otti’s education reform agenda, which places high priority on teacher welfare, quality teaching, and effective learning.” Mr Ubochi said.
The initiative is to be enjoyed by newly recruited teachers who participated in the just-concluded orientation exercise organised by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education. Eligible teachers are required to submit their bank details through the same portal that facilitated their recruitment and can be accessed via the ministry’s website. Mr Ubochi assured the teachers that the funds would be disbursed to them shortly.

Chief Richard Harrison, a former commissioner in the state, stated that such initiatives are commendable, describing it as a “bold and timely intervention” that reflects a practical understanding of the needs of educators
“Motivating teachers through such incentives is a vital strategy for improving learning outcomes. This move shows that Abia is not just recruiting teachers but is also taking deliberate steps to support and retain them,” he said.
The initiative aligns with the new resurgence of the education sector happening in most Southeast states at the moment.
