The Former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman in Ebonyi state, Barrister Silas Onu, joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, dumping the PDP party, adding to the mass exodus from the former ruling party in the nation.
In a resignation letter addressed to the chairman of Obiozora ward, Onu tendered his resignation, ending his membership of the PDP and embracing the new ADC coalition. He was the PDP candidate in the state for the February 4, 2024, senatorial rerun election for Ebonyi South Zone.
“It is with a heavy heart, yet for patriotic reasons, that I resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter read in part.
“Due to some irreconcilable differences, especially the role being played by a few sitting governors of the party, I am compelled to pursue my political aspirations from a different, but stable platform,” Onu stated.
The former senatorial candidate urged his support base and the good people of Ebonyi State to join him in the ADC coalition, citing internal party power struggles as his key reason for leaving the PDP.
“I thank you for your unflinching support throughout my membership of the PDP and pray that we can all journey into the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to continue forging a strong political movement for the overall good of our people,” he concluded.
The People’s Democratic Party continues to bleed members as the party’s internal struggles continue to linger. Last week, the former vice president of the nation, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, resigned from the party, putting an end to his membership.
Atiku, a key figure in the newly formed ADC coalition, said irreconcilable differences and the party’s deviation from its foundational principles informed his decision to leave the party.
The PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, slated to address the party’s issue, was inconclusive, with key party members missing from the meeting.
The party’s internal crises, which started after the 2023 general elections, have kept the party from becoming the main opposition party in the country. The Labour Party, led by Mr Peter Obi, became the de facto opposition, filling the shoes, but it also suffers from an internal crisis.
The ADC coalition features prominent politicians like Mr Peter Obi, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El Rufai, and Rauf Aregbesola. David Mark is the interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, assuming the position in July 2025.
