The Federal Government of Nigeria, in its 2026 Appropriation Bill, has allocated N1.02 billion for the provision of a Police Secondary School in Bende, Abia State, and the reconstruction/rehabilitation of damaged police divisions in select areas in the Southeast.
The FG, in its latest appropriation bill, allocated N1,002,511,711 for police infrastructure in the Southeast under its Police Formations and Command section of the bill. The budget also allocated N8 billion to churches and mosques, drawing criticisms from Nigerians who think the FG’s priority is out of place.
Nigerian’s also questioned the decision to allocate N1bn for Church Equipment in the Bende Federal Constituency represented by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt, Hon Benjamin Kalu.
Respondents from Bende claim to have not received any church equipment, asking for clarification on the issue and suspecting possible misappropriation of public funds.
The Development of funding churches and mosques to the tune of N8bn by the Federal Government has also raised questions about Nigeria’s stance on religious freedom and its status as a secular state.
Critics believe that the FG prioritising religion is not a good look in the light of many challenges in the country. They also think that Nigeria as a secular state should not be paying much attention to or funding religion, as it creates an avenue for the dangerous mix of Religion and Politics.
The total 2026 budget by the FG sits at N68.32 trillion, up from N58.47 trillion in 2025. The Bola Tinubu Administration has received its fair share of criticisms for borrowing with little impact on the quality of life and cost of living for Nigerians.
