An Education influencer and quality education Advocate, Alex Onyia, is floating the idea of organizing a Southeast Maths Olympiad competition aimed at promoting efficiency in the subject amongst students of the region.
Sharing his thoughts on X, Onyia stated that the proposed South East Maths Olympiad will give every child in the south east an opportunity to compete in the exercise.
The best performing students in the competition would receive cash prizes ranging from N5 million for the Senior category, N3 million for the Junior Category, and N2 million for the Primary category.
The education influencer stated that a new curriculum would be developed for the competition and would be a mix of the Nigerian and British curricula. The final round of the Southeast Maths Olympiad would be hosted in Enugu and would be a combination of both written and computer-based tests.
The funds for the competition would be raised through the Intervention for Southeast Education Fund (ISEE), a donation campaign fronted by Alex Onyia, which has currently raised nearly N6 million.
Onyia, who commands a staggering 65,000 followers on X, has carved a niche on the platform for advocating for good education in Nigeria, with a slight focus on the South East region.
His projects funded by the ISEE initiative include the one child one desk initiative, which seeks to equip Southeast schools with adequate furniture to maximise the learning experience, and the back to school initiative, which looks to return 10,000 out-of-school children in the south east back to school.
