Delta state topped Nigeria’s Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) list, receiving N542.44 billion between January and November 2025.
Data revealed by Statisense showed that the South-South state topped states like Lagos and Rivers in FAAC allocation collected in 2025. The data revealed that only five states in Nigeria accounted for 33.4% of the total FAAC allocation in 2025.
Four of the five states are situated in the oil-rich South-South geopolitical zone, while Lagos represented the South West. The Southeast, North Central, North West, and Middle belt regions were not represented on the top five list, indicating where the bulk of the nation’s wealth goes to.
The top five states and their respective FAAC allocations include
- Delta — ₦542.44 billion
- Lagos — ₦472.05 billion
- Rivers — ₦460.77 billion
- Akwa Ibom — ₦416.22 billion
- Bayelsa — ₦414.21 billion
The 36 states in the federation pulled a total of N6.90 trillion between January and November 2025, with the five states above accounting for N2.31 trillion of that total.
” With those five removed, the remaining 31 states and the FCT shared ₦4.59 trillion, a per‑state average of ₦145 billion, underscoring a FAAC system where a handful of states dwarf the rest,” Statisense stated, reacting to the new data.
Oil-rich Delta and Bayelsa Punching Way Below Its Weight
The 2025 FAAC data placed states like Delta State and Bayelsa State in the same league with heavy hitters like Lagos and Rivers State. Delta topping the list received a mixed reaction from analysts and the general public, given the state’s general optics.
Delta and Bayelsa states, despite being major earners from Nigeria’s commonwealth, have very little to show for it over the years. Key infrastructure, such as roads, remains subpar, especially in heavily trafficked areas like Asaba and Warri.
Outside infrastructure, the duo has done little to improve the state’s Human Development Index (HDI), with no significant investment in Education, Urban Housing, or Healthcare.
Former PDP Strongholds Now Aligned with Ruling APC
The states of Bayelsa and Delta were once strongholds of the People’s Democratic Party, holding political sway in the state for years.
The current administrations of both states are now aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress, having defected from the PDP.
While this has no bearing on the FAAC allocations received by the states. It would be interesting to note whether both states finally start moving like big-league states in light of the allocations and the newfound political alignment with the centre.
