A Cable Index report revealed that the southeast state gave President Bola Tinubu 127,605 votes in 2023, a measly 1.45% of his total 8,794,724 votes.
The five states in the Southeast constituted less than 2% of President Tinubu’s total votes highlighting his significant unpopularity in the region as at 2023. Imo state polled 66,406 votes, Enugu polled 4,772 votes, Ebonyi polled 42,402 votes , Abia polled 8,914 votes, while Anambra polled 5,111 votes, adding up to 127,605 votes.
The All progressives Congress since then has stepped up its game in the region adding two states Ebonyi and Enugu in the region while spreading its tentacles across other states in the region.
Tinubu’s abysmal outing in he Southeast stems from the fact that his biggest rival candidate, Mr Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra state was heavily backed by the region garnering over 6 million votes.
The 2027 presidential elections is a rematch of the 2023 elections as the same candidates will face off again for the country’s number one office. Incumbent President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu will run under the ruling APC party, Mr Peter Obi is flying the flag of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) while Alhaji Atiku Abubakar will run under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The Southeast will obviously give Tinubu more votes this time courtesy of the serious inroads the party has made in the region. APC figures like the current Minister of Works, Engr David Umahi, Deputy Speaker of the House of representatives, Hon Benjamin Kalu, the Governors of Imo state, Ebonyi state and Enugu state and others will actively pull the strings for a tinubu landslide in the region.
However, it is key to note that the southeast has one of the worst cases of voter apathy in the country due to existing feelings of marginalisation.
