A five years cumulative report by Statisense on the Chinua Achebe International Airport stated that the airport does an average of 2,156 flights annually.
The cumulative report which looked at numbers from the airport from 2021 to 2025 highlighted key details like passenger count, total flights, Average Annual Performance and Average Daily Flights.
Numbers
- Total Flights: 8,624
- Total Passengers: 600,000
- Average Annual Performance
- Average Annual Flights: 2,156 flights
- Average Annual Passengers: 150,000 passengers
- Average Daily Flights: 6 flights
- Average Daily Passengers: 411 passengers
The data follows talks by the Soludo Administration for a second airport at Ndikelionwu. This has sparked a conversation on the viability of a second airport giving that the existing one in the state is yet to hit the 10 flights a day mark.
The current airport in Anambra state is also facing competition with the much pronunced Asaba Airport making the case for a second airport even more questionable.
Methodology
Statisense did not provide a source or its methodology for this data. Its public knowledge that the Chinua Achebe Airport does an average of 4 to 6 flights a day. This puts the annual flight tally at 2,190 at best.
What We Think
The numbers if accurate are quite low for a state like Anambra with high rate of air travellers. This shows that the Anambra Airport traffic is seriously diverted by the Asaba Airport which is more pronunced than the one in Anambra state.
The talks about a second airport is quite an excess giving that the existing one is not yet running at full capacity.
