Abia’s green transport plan by Alex Otti has moved forward, with a second batch of 20 electric buses departing China for Abia State.
The new buses will increase the state’s electric transport fleet to 40 before the end of next month. The move is part of efforts to modernize public transport and reduce pollution in the state.
The electric bus project is a major part of the government’s plan to improve transport services. It aims to reduce air pollution, lower transport costs for residents, and position Abia as a leader in clean energy transport in Nigeria.
The buses will operate in major cities. This includes Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia, as well as other key routes within the state.
Charging stations are already being installed at key transport points. Local drivers and technicians are also being trained to manage and maintain the electric fleet, creating new job opportunities.
Officials say the shift from fuel-powered buses to electric ones will bring cleaner air. Added benefits include quieter roads and cheaper transport fares for residents. The project is part of the state’s wider “Rebuild Abia” agenda.
The Abia State Coscharis Partnership
The first tranche of the buses used for the scheme was manufactured by Coscharis Group. Coscharis Group is an indigenous Automobile company headed by Dr Cosmas Maduka. The EV buses were the first to be introduced by a state government for its mass transit scheme in Nigeria. The buses were likened to the London metro system by Coscharis during their launch.
The urban mass transit in Abia is not without its challenges. The first days were rough after a surge in passengers, as the period coincided with a fuel price hike.
The card ticketing system was also an initial barrier. People needed to be onboarded on how to use it effectively. Abia State joins Enugu State in the list of Southeast states with thriving mass transit schemes.
Transportation, Electricity, and Road Infrastructure are some of the highlights of the Alex Otti administration. He remains the favourite to win the Abia state gubernatorial polls in 2027 ahead of his political rivals.
